Kingston sits directly across the Market Street Bridge from downtown Wilkes-Barre, and with about 13,300 residents it is the most populous borough in Luzerne County. It describes itself as a tree-lined bedroom community, and that is accurate: 2.2 square miles of residential streets off Wyoming Avenue, with a home-rule government, its own recreation center and pool, a three-minute fire and ambulance response time and seven parks. Kingston has long been one of the Wyoming Valley’s most desirable addresses for buyers who want a walkable neighborhood a few minutes from the city.
The housing stock is older but well kept: about a third of homes predate 1940, and a notably large share was built in the 1970s as the borough rebuilt after the 1972 Agnes flood. Expect two-story colonials and four-squares on deep lots, brick ranches, and a handful of condominiums.

Location and commute
U.S. Route 11 is Wyoming Avenue, Kingston’s main street, and Route 309 follows the Cross Valley Expressway to Interstate 81. Downtown Wilkes-Barre is across the bridge, Scranton is about 21 miles away, and Kirby Park and Nesbitt Park, with their trails, ball fields and river access, are on Kingston’s side of the Susquehanna.
Schools
Kingston is in the Wyoming Valley West School District, whose middle school and two of its elementary schools are in the borough; the high school is in Plymouth. Kingston is also home to Wyoming Seminary, a college-preparatory school founded in 1844, and Good Shepherd Academy.
Landmarks and community
- The Kingston Armory, built in 1923 and on the National Register, still hosts concerts, the Irem Shrine Circus and the Luzerne County Folk Festival.
- Hoyt Library on Wyoming Avenue is part of the county library system.
- The borough’s recreation program runs an indoor recreation center, six tennis courts, a lighted softball field and an Olympic-plus-size pool.
The river and the levee
Kingston lies inside the 16-mile Wyoming Valley levee system, which held during the record 2011 crest and protects about 15,000 properties in the valley. Flood insurance is still worth reviewing on any home near the river.

At the end of August 2026 Zillow’s home value index for Kingston was about $237,000, up about 3 percent over the year. The 2024 Census survey put the median value of owner-occupied homes near $173,000 and the median household income near $55,000.
