About the Hazleton Area School District
Hazleton Area High School, opened in 1992 on West 23rd Street in Hazle Township, enrolls close to 3,900 students in grades 9 to 12, home of the Cougars. Alongside it the district runs the Academy of Sciences, opened in 2013, an Arts and Humanities Academy and a career center. Younger students attend neighborhood elementary and middle schools: Drums, Freeland, Hazleton, Heights-Terrace, Maple Manor, McAdoo-Kelayres, Valley and West Hazleton, most serving kindergarten through grade 8, plus the Arthur Street school (K-2) and the Hazle Township Early Learning Center (pre-K to 2). District offices are at 1515 West 23rd Street, Hazleton, PA 18202; the website is hasdk12.org.

- Hazleton and West Hazleton: the city grid off Broad Street, with the region’s most affordable single-family homes and doubles.
- Hazle Township: newer subdivisions, townhomes, the Eagle Rock Resort community, the high school campus and the Humboldt Industrial Park.
- Butler Township (Drums), Sugarloaf Township and Conyngham: the Conyngham Valley north of the city, a mix of older village homes, farms and newer developments near Interstate 80 and Penn State Hazleton.
- Freeland, Foster Township and Jeddo: the hill towns east of the city near Eckley Miners’ Village.
- Black Creek Township and the Schuylkill and Carbon County portions: rural land and small boroughs along the county lines.
