Nanticoke Homes
Nanticoke is a city of about 10,600 at the southern end of the Wyoming Valley, and one of the most affordable places to buy a home in Luzerne County. It grew as a coal town, peaked at more than 27,000 residents in the 1930s and became a city in 1926, so it is marking its centennial in 2026. Its three sections, Honey Pot to the northwest, Downtown around Patriot Square, and the Hanover Section to the southeast, are filled with the sturdy doubles, singles and corner storefronts that built the anthracite region.
About 43 percent of homes predate 1940 and 56 percent are owner-occupied. The 2024 Census survey put the median value of owner-occupied homes near $108,000, the lowest of the valley’s cities, which makes it a common starting point for first-time buyers and for investors looking for rental property near the community college.

Location and commute
Route 29, the South Cross Valley Expressway, connects Nanticoke to Interstate 81 in a few minutes, and U.S. Route 11 runs along the river. Wilkes-Barre is a short drive up the valley and Scranton is about 27 miles away.
Schools and college
The city is served by the Greater Nanticoke Area School District, whose four schools share one campus along Kosciuszko Street. Luzerne County Community College’s 167-acre main campus is in Nanticoke; founded in 1967, it enrolls about 6,000 students across the region and is one of the county’s larger employers.
Community and history
- Patriot Square downtown hosts a farmers market, concerts and festivals through the year.
- Concrete City, 22 concrete duplexes built by a railroad coal company in 1911 and abandoned in 1924, is a state-recognized historic site near the Hanover Section.
- The Nanticoke Historical Society operates from the historic Samantha Mill House on East Main Street, and the Sanitary Bakery has been open since 1918.
