Bloomsburg is the only incorporated town in Pennsylvania, the seat of Columbia County and a college town of about 12,700 on the Susquehanna River. Its downtown is a National Register historic district of more than 660 buildings, its fair has run every fall since 1855 and is the largest in the state, and Commonwealth University’s Bloomsburg campus, founded in 1839, brings roughly 8,000 students to the hill above Main Street. Interstate 80 passes just north of town, which keeps Bloomsburg within reach of Wilkes-Barre, Williamsport and Harrisburg.
Homes range from Victorian and Colonial Revival houses in the historic core to mid-century neighborhoods on the east side and newer construction in the surrounding townships. The university keeps rental demand strong.

Location and commute
U.S. Route 11, Route 42 and Route 487 serve the town, with Interstate 80 exits 232 and 236 a few minutes north. Wilkes-Barre is about 44 miles and 50 minutes away via I-80 and I-81; Mountain Top is about 39 miles. Most residents work locally: the average commute is under 15 minutes.
Schools and the university
The Bloomsburg Area School District covers the town and Beaver, Hemlock, Main and Montour Townships, about 81 square miles, with three K-5 elementary schools, Bloomsburg Middle School and Bloomsburg Area High School. Commonwealth University of Pennsylvania’s Bloomsburg campus is the oldest of the three campuses merged in 2022.
Health care and work
Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital on Fair Street has a full emergency department, surgery and obstetrics. Geisinger, the state university system, Wise Foods, The Webstaurant Store, the Dollar Tree distribution center, Kawneer and Autoneum are among the county’s largest employers.
Things to do
- The Bloomsburg Fair, held since 1855, runs nine days each late September and draws hundreds of thousands of visitors to the fairgrounds at the west end of town.
- The Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble, a professional resident company founded in 1978, performs at the Alvina Krause Theatre on Center Street.
- Town Park, 43 acres established in 1927, and the Children’s Museum on West Seventh Street are open year-round.
- The Renaissance Jamboree fills Main and Market Streets with craft vendors and music each April.
Buying in the floodplain
The Susquehanna and Fishing Creek can cover up to a third of the town’s land in a major flood. The flood of record came with Tropical Storm Lee in September 2011 at 32.75 feet; Agnes reached 31 feet in 1972. Since then the town has built two phases of flood wall (2016 and 2020), bought out repetitive-loss homes on West Main Street and earned a Community Rating System class that gives every flood-insurance policy in town a 20 percent discount.
