Mountain Top Homes For Sale
Mountain Top is where Button Real Estate lives. Our office is on South Mountain Boulevard, and our agents have been selling homes on the mountain for decades. It is not a town in the legal sense but a community of about 11,500 people spread across Wright, Fairview, Rice and Dorrance Townships, all sharing the 18707 ZIP code and the Crestwood School District, at about 1,580 feet on the ridge 8 miles south of Wilkes-Barre. That elevation is the point: cooler summers, wooded lots, lakes, and a 20-minute drive down Route 309 to the city.
Mountain Top is one of the most stable and highest-value markets in Luzerne County. About 89 percent of households own their homes, the median household income is well above the county’s, and the housing stock runs from 1960s ranches and split-levels near the Boulevard to newer colonials in subdivisions such as Bow Creek Manor, Kirby Estates, Woodberry Manor, Pine Ridge Estates and Heritage Oaks, plus lake homes at Nuangola, Penn Lake and Lake Blytheburn and large wooded parcels in Dorrance and Rice.

Location and commute
Route 309 runs straight through Mountain Top to Wilkes-Barre, about 10 miles and 20 minutes by car. Interstate 81 has exits at Dorrance and Nuangola on the west side of the community, Interstate 80 is a few minutes south at the Route 309 interchange, and the Turnpike’s Northeast Extension is reachable at Bear Creek. Hazleton is about 15 miles, Scranton about 28, and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton International Airport about 20. The average commute is around 26 minutes, and many residents work in Wilkes-Barre’s hospitals, the Humboldt and CenterPoint business parks, or from home.
Crestwood School District
Every Mountain Top address is in the Crestwood School District, which is a large part of why families move here. About 2,700 students attend Fairview Elementary and Rice Elementary (kindergarten to grade 6) and the Crestwood Middle School and High School on the secondary campus along Route 309. The Comets’ field hockey program has won four state championships, and the high school’s turf stadium hosts football, soccer and the marching band. Third-party rankings such as Public School Review place Crestwood in the top 20 percent of Pennsylvania districts.

- The Mountain Top on the Move Fourth of July parade has marched down South Mountain Boulevard every year since 1989, and the Marian Sutherland Kirby Library on Kirby Avenue is the community’s living room.
- History is close at hand: the Ashley Planes, the inclined railway that hauled coal cars up the mountain, and the old resort village of Glen Summit are both in Fairview Township and on the National Register.
