Berwick is a borough of about 10,300 on the north bank of the Susquehanna River in Columbia County, founded in 1786 by the surveyor Evan Owen and laid out on a grid of numbered streets that still defines it. It is a working town with a long manufacturing history, from the railroad cars and the 15,000 Stuart tanks built at the American Car and Foundry plant during World War II to Wise Foods, the snack maker founded here in 1921 and still headquartered in town. Berwick sits about 31 miles from Wilkes-Barre and 26 miles from Mountain Top, with Interstate 80 just across the river.
Most homes are two- to four-bedroom houses of roughly 1,000 to 1,300 square feet on the numbered streets, with larger and newer homes toward the edges of the borough and in Briar Creek and Salem Townships. It is one of the most competitive small markets in the area: in summer 2026 homes were selling in under three weeks.

Living in Berwick
Location and commute
U.S. Route 11 runs through the center of town as Front and Second Streets, and Route 93 crosses the river to Nescopeck and on to Interstate 80 and Hazleton. Wilkes-Barre is about a 45-minute drive, Bloomsburg about 12 miles west. The Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, a nuclear plant in neighboring Salem Township with about 900 employees, is one of the largest employers in the area along with Wise Foods and Berwick Offray.
Schools
The Berwick Area School District serves Berwick, Briar Creek Borough and Briar Creek Township in Columbia County, plus Nescopeck, Hollenback, Nescopeck Township and Salem Township across the river in Luzerne County. Students attend East Berwick or West Berwick Elementary (K-4), Berwick Middle School and Berwick Area Senior High School, home of the Bulldogs.
Health care
Berwick’s hospital emergency department closed in September 2022; the facility now operates only as a small inpatient geriatric psychiatry unit. The nearest emergency rooms are Geisinger Bloomsburg Hospital, about 14 miles west, and the hospitals in Hazleton, about 20 miles south.
Events and landmarks
- Christmas Boulevard has lit up roughly a mile of Market Street every December since 1947, a free drive-through display created by the Jaycees.
- Run for the Diamonds, a nine-mile race down Market Street every Thanksgiving morning since 1908, hands diamonds to its winners.
- Test Track Park on South Eaton Street, once the proving ground for those wartime tanks, now has a paved mile loop, a riverside trail, a boat launch and disc golf, and hosts World War II Weekend in July and RiverFest in October.
- The Jackson Mansion on Market Street, an 1877 Second Empire landmark, houses the Berwick Historical Society.
