Living in Dallas
Dallas is the commercial and civic hub of the Back Mountain. Route 309 and Route 415 run through it, which puts downtown Wilkes-Barre about 9 miles away by car and Scranton about 26 miles via Interstate 81. Most residents commute into the valley or work at one of the area’s two large institutions: Misericordia University, founded by the Sisters of Mercy in 1924 and now enrolling about 2,200 students on a 120-acre campus, and the State Correctional Institution at Dallas on Follies Road, which employs roughly 685 people.
Dallas School District
The Dallas School District serves Dallas Borough, Dallas Township, Franklin Township and Kingston Township, so buying anywhere in Dallas puts you in the district. About 2,400 students attend four schools on one campus off Conyngham Avenue: Wycallis Primary Center (K-2), Dallas Intermediate School (3-5), Dallas Middle School (6-8) and Dallas Senior High School (9-12). Full-day kindergarten has been offered since 2021.
Parks, recreation and events
- Frances Slocum State Park, about 5 miles from Dallas, covers 1,035 acres around a 165-acre lake with boating, fishing, swimming, a 100-site campground and 9 miles of trails.
- Harveys Lake, a ten-minute drive, is the largest natural lake in Pennsylvania by volume and the Back Mountain’s summer gathering place.
- The Back Mountain Trail follows a former Lehigh Valley Railroad corridor for 7 developed miles, with plans to extend it from Wilkes-Barre’s riverfront all the way to Harveys Lake.
- The Lands at Hillside Farms in neighboring Shavertown is a 438-acre nonprofit dairy farm with a dairy store, an ice cream parlor and year-round farm programs for children.
- The Luzerne County Fair has run each September on Route 118 in Dallas for more than 60 years, and the Back Mountain Memorial Library Auction on Huntsville Road held its 80th edition in July 2026.

Dallas is one of the Wyoming Valley’s more competitive markets. In September 2026 Redfin put the median sale price over the previous three months at about $325,000, with homes typically going under contract in about a week and selling at or slightly above asking price.
