Hazleton is a city of about 30,000 on the southern edge of Luzerne County and, at 1,689 feet, the highest incorporated city in Pennsylvania. It grew on anthracite after coal was discovered here in 1818, and it has grown again over the past two decades on logistics and manufacturing: the Humboldt Industrial Park and the other CAN DO business parks around the city employ thousands at companies such as Amazon, Hershey, Cargill, American Eagle Outfitters and Lockheed Martin. Its downtown is being rebuilt block by block.
The city is laid out on a grid of numbered streets off West Broad Street, mostly single-family homes and doubles in Colonial Revival, ranch and Cape Cod styles, with the Heights and Terrace neighborhoods on the hill and larger office buildings downtown converted to apartments. Surrounding Hazle Township has the area’s newer subdivisions, townhomes and the gated Eagle Rock Resort community.

Location and commute
Interstate 81 is about 3 miles from downtown with exits at Routes 424, 924 and 93, and Interstate 80 crosses just north of the city, which is why the distribution centers are here. Wilkes-Barre is about 24 miles and 35 to 40 minutes away, Allentown about 47 miles and Philadelphia about two hours. Hazleton Public Transit runs nine bus routes, and Hazleton Regional Airport serves general aviation two miles northwest of town.
Schools and colleges
The Hazleton Area School District is the largest in Luzerne County with about 13,000 students; Hazleton Area High School in Hazle Township, opened in 1992, enrolls close to 3,900 and is joined by the Academy of Sciences and an Arts and Humanities Academy. Penn State Hazleton, founded in 1934, sits on a 125-acre campus in Sugarloaf Township, and Luzerne County Community College and Lackawanna College both have centers in the city.
Health care
Lehigh Valley Hospital–Hazleton on East Broad Street is a Level IV trauma center and primary stroke center with a cancer institute, a family birth center and inpatient rehabilitation.
Culture, parks and events
- Eckley Miners’ Village in nearby Foster Township is a preserved 1854 coal patch town run by the state as a museum; the 1970 film The Molly Maguires was shot there.
- The Hazleton Art League operates the Hayden Family Center for the Arts in a renovated bank at 31 West Broad Street.
- The Hazleton One Community Center, founded by Hazleton native and baseball manager Joe Maddon, runs pre-K, after-school and sports programs.
- CAN DO Community Park downtown and City View Park on the south side, with the area’s only fully inclusive playground and the free Rockin’ the Mountain summer concerts, lead a system of more than a dozen city parks; the Greater Hazleton Rails to Trails begins in Hazle Township.
- Downtown hosts a farmers market, First Friday art walks and street festivals through the summer.

Homes.com put the median sale price over the previous twelve months near $250,000, with single-family homes typically between $170,000 and $300,000 and townhomes in the newer developments closer to $280,000.
