White Haven Homes For Sale
White Haven is a borough of about 1,200 people on the Lehigh River, 17 miles south of Wilkes-Barre and 4 miles from the Interstate 80 and Turnpike interchange. Josiah White, co-founder of the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company, laid it out in 1824 where his canal met the railroad, and the railroad history is still visible in the 1889 engine house that is now the community library and the yellow Union Pacific caboose on Main Street. Today White Haven is best known as the northern gateway to Lehigh Gorge State Park and the 26-mile Lehigh Gorge Trail, which begins just outside downtown.
The borough itself is compact, with older homes on a river-town grid. Much of what sells with a White Haven address lies in the surrounding townships and lake communities of the western Poconos, from small cabins and lakeside cottages to newer homes on wooded acreage, all in the Crestwood School District.

Location and commute
Interstate 80’s White Haven exit (Route 940 and Route 437) is at the edge of town, and the Turnpike’s Northeast Extension is 4 miles east, which puts Wilkes-Barre about 30 minutes away, Hazleton about 25 and Allentown about an hour. The average commute for residents is just under half an hour.
Schools
White Haven is in the Crestwood School District, with elementary students attending Fairview or Rice Elementary and secondary students the Crestwood campus on Route 309 in Mountain Top.
Outdoors
- Lehigh Gorge State Park follows the river 4,548 acres downstream to Jim Thorpe; the rail trail is popular with cyclists and the river with whitewater rafters, and several outfitters start or end trips in White Haven at the D&L Trail’s north and south trailheads.
- Francis E. Walter Dam, completed in 1961 just upstream, offers trout and bass fishing, kayaking, boating and disc golf, with state game lands beside it.
- Hickory Run State Park, nearly 16,000 acres with a famous boulder field, 44 miles of trails and swimming at Sand Spring Lake, is minutes east, and Jack Frost ski resort is nearby.
- Downtown, the Powerhouse Eatery occupies a restored early-1900s power plant, and Jam Below the Dam brings two days of live music, vendors and food trucks to Main Street each summer.
